At Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura S.L. We are aware of the environmental impact of our activity and we work every day to reduce, protect and make our activity sustainable over time in harmony with the environment. Since 2019, we have implemented an ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System in our factory, a system that establishes the foundations for continuous improvement of environmental performance, thus contributing to the conservation of natural resources and the achievement of our environmental objectives.
We work on the use of whey, the main waste of the dairy industry, with a large amount of nutrients. We reprocess it, resulting in products of great nutritional value such as cottage cheese, intended for final sale. The remaining whey is concentrated and used in the production of organic composting.
In our commitment to a sustainable and efficient circular economy in all our processes, we are evaluating the viability of developing a biogas plant to manage the organic waste produced in the factory, thus generating green energy that feeds the boilers, thereby reducing this way the consumption of fuel of fossil origin.
Regarding energy consumption, we have installed photovoltaic panels in both the Tuineje dairy production center and the maturation center in Puerto del Rosario, avoiding the emission of 160 tons of CO2 annually into the atmosphere, with the aim of In the coming years, 90% of the energy we consume will be of renewable and clean origin.
Another of our objectives for this year 2024 is to reduce cardboard consumption, replacing part of the cardboard boxes with returnable plastic boxes for distribution among our delegations on the islands.
Reducing plastic consumption is another priority area of environmental improvement, establishing objectives to reduce the weight of packaging plastics, as well as improving the management of plastic waste during packaging.
The use of water is especially critical in Fuerteventura and since 2019 we have installed an automatic CIP cleaning system, which allows us to recover cleaning water for other circuits, considerably reducing our consumption.
Finally, within our environmental strategy, we work to improve training and awareness on environmental matters for our workers, suppliers and clients.
